Flavor restriction associated with decrease in e-cigarette use by youth in New York State
A study by researchers in New York examined changes in nicotine product use among youth after the passage of a statewide restriction on the sale of flavored e-cigarettes in 2020. The team conducted online surveys of youth ages 16-19. Over a two-year period, they found significant decreases in past 30-day e-cigarette use, cigarette use, and dual use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes. However, almost all youth who vaped still reported using a flavored e-cigarette following the restriction, leading the authors to note that increased compliance with the restriction could result in greater decreases. “Continuous monitoring is important to better understand perceptions and use patterns and access at the individual, retail, and population level to inform future enforcement and restrictions,” the authors concluded.
