Hookah lounges, vape shops, and tobacco retailers cluster near California colleges
Previous studies inferred that hookah lounges and vape shops cluster near colleges from evidence of greater density and closer proximity to campuses. However, this study, including ASPiRE’s Nina Schleicher and Lisa Henriksen, developed a new approach to test for spatial clustering. The authors compared the observed locations of hookah lounges, vape shops and all tobacco retailers to 100 simulated datasets that placed the stores randomly in census tracts in proportion to population density. Analysis showed that all three business types cluster near community colleges, and hookah lounges and tobacco retailers also cluster near four-year colleges. The authors recommend expanding state and local laws that restrict the distance of tobacco retailers to schools to include college campuses. Read the study.
